The best snails to add to your pond are the Black Japanese Trapdoor Snails (Viviparis malleatus).  Trapdoor snails are brownish-black in color and are live-bearing snails. They are not like some of the  egg-laying snail varieties  and will not over run your pond with snails.  We ship snails that are anywheres from 3/4" to 2 1/2" in size.  Snails play an important role in creating a balanced ecosystem in your pond. The Japanese Trapdoor Snails help keep algae under control, consuming algae from plant containers, rocks and the pond liner. They also will feed on decaying matter in the pond such as decomposing leaves, fish waste and leftover fish food. 

There are other snail varieties available, such as the Apple Snails, Golden Snails or Mystery Snails.   We strongly suggest, if you love your pond plants to stay away from these varieties.  These varieties not only consume algae and debris, they are plant eating machines and will wipe out your pond plants as well.  They are also egg-laying snails and can reproduce rapidly, and if you are in a tropical climate, can be quite impossible to get rid of , once you introduce them into your pond.  I don't know about you, but I love my water lilies too much to have them become snail food!
